SUMMARY

This workshop introduces participants to the basics of proper operation and maintenance of steam and hot water boilers. The goal of the workshop is to train participants to improve boiler safety, reliability, and efficiency. Proper maintenance of equipment can add years to its operating life.
Public Works Series

Boiler Operations and Maintenance is one of many informative workshops in CIRMA’s public works series.

Designed for both supervisors and employees, these workshops teach the core risk management skills you need to safely perform your job and control losses.

For more information about CIRMA Workshops, please email CIRMA at cirmaworkshop@ccm-ct.org.

"The leading cause of injury relating to boilers is poor maintenance or operator error."

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Failure to properly maintain boilers can lead to crippling service interruptions, thousands of dollars of preventable repairs bills, and shortened equipment life. With today’s high fuel costs, maintaining your boiler at peak operating efficiency can provide considerable savings. Faulty boilers are a safety hazard to personnel and can cause serious damage to surrounding structures.

The workshop is intended for all municipal employees whose responsibilities involve the operation and/or maintenance of boilers, ranging from cast-iron hot water boilers normally used in building heating systems, fire tube steam boilers from 50 to 500 horsepower, to water tube boilers from 20,000 to 70,000 lbs/hr.

Topics will include:

  • Boilers—what are they and how they work.
  • Boiler failures—what can go wrong and why.
  • Boiler codes—understanding their importance to proper operation and maintenance.
  • Fundamentals of boiler operation from startup, to routine operation, to shutdown, with emphasis on testing of controls and safety devices.
  • Fundamentals of boiler maintenance, with an emphasis on maintaining code integrity, low water fuel cutouts, and safety/relief valves.
  • Boiler inspections—what to look for and how to prepare.
Included in the handout materials are checklists for proper maintenance of fuel supply devices and boiler operating logs.

  • Directors of Facilities
  • Fire Marshals
  • Building Officials
  • Maintenance Personnel
