SUMMARY
Sprains and strains are the number one injury in the municipal
workplace. This CIRMA workshop teaches employees how to
avoid the lifting and moving behaviors that lead to these
injuries.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Sprains and strains are the most frequently occurring injuries in
municipal workplaces. Between 1998 and 2006, CIRMA received
nearly 25,000 such claims resulting in over $120,000,000 in
direct incurred claim costs, averaging almost $5,000 per claim.
This CIRMA workshop explains and reinforces proper lifting and
moving techniques. The instructors illustrate the application of
these techniques with a number of real-life scenarios developed
from actual municipal work environments.
Topics include the following:
- Principles of back safety
- Anatomy of the human back
- Common causes of back injury
- Safe lifting, pulling, and pushing techniques
- How to identify your limitations, pacing your efforts
- Preventive measures—exercises and stretches to tone and
strengthen your back

Joey Barbera
Senior Risk Control Consultant
CIRMA Risk Management Services
In 5 years of experience in the insurance
Risk Management Field, Joey has provided
Risk Management consulting to various public
agencies that range from Public Housing
Authorities to Section 8 and low income housing across the
country focusing on General Liability, Fleet and Property. Joey
also has experience in Security and Emergency Medical Response
as he spent 5 years as a volunteer within his home town's Fire
Department. Joey has a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Sociology
with a Concentration in Criminal Justice from Central
Connecticut State University and has been certified as a Public
Housing Manager, a Licensed Producer, and a Licensed Casualty
and Property Adjuster.
Richard Murray, MSPT
Area Therapy Director, Concentra Medical Centers
Mr. Murray received his Master and Bachelor of Science degrees
in Physical Therapy from the University of Connecticut. Richard
is now the area therapy director for Concentra Medical Centers in
Connecticut. He has published articles in Clinical Biomechanics
and Journal of Orthopeadic Sports and Physical Therapy.

DIRECTIONS
From the ENFIELD Area: Take I-91 South into Hartford. When you
get to Hartford, take left exit for Route 2/Interstate 84 East. Take the
Glastonbury exit onto Route 2 East. Follow Route 2 East and take Exit 8
Hebron Avenue/Route 94. At the end of exit, turn right onto Hebron
Avenue and follow it down to the end. You will not be able to go any
farther. Daybreak Coffee Shop will be in front of you. Turn left onto Main
Street. Follow Main Street approximately 1/4 mile. The Town Hall will
be a brick building on your right at 2155 Main Street.
From the NEW HAVEN Area: Take I-91 North towards Hartford. Just
after you pass Wethersfield, there will be an Exit 25-26 for "Glastonbury
Exit Only/Route 3". Take this exit and go over the Putnam Bridge. Do
not head into Wethersfield. After you go over the Putnam Bridge, take
the exit for Route 2 towards Norwich/New London and the take Exit 8
Hebron Avenue/Route 94. At the end of exit, turn right onto Hebron
Avenue and follow it down to the end. You will not be able to go any
farther. Daybreak Coffee Shop will be in front of you. Turn left onto Main
Street. Follow Main Street approximately 1/4 mile. The Town Hall will
be a brick building on your right at 2155 Main Street.
From the NORWICH Area: Take Route 2 West towards Hartford. Take
the Hebron Avenue exit. Turn right at the end of the exit and then turn
left at the traffic light onto Hebron Avenue (there will be a Texaco at
the end of the exit). Follow Hebron Avenue down to the end. You will
not be able to go any farther. Daybreak Coffee Shop will be in front of
you. Turn left onto Main Street. Follow Main Street approximately 1/4
mile. The Town Hall will be a brick building on your right at 2155
Main Street.
From the ESSEX Area: Take Route 9 to I-91 North exit. Get onto
I-91 North and then follow New Haven directions above.
From the VERNON Area: Take I-84 West towards Waterbury until
you just get into Hartford. Take the left exit for Route 2. Once you are
on Route 2, take Exit 8 Hebron Avenue/Route 94. Then follow directions
from New Haven above.
From the WATERBURY Area: Take I-84 East towards Hartford.
When you get into Hartford, follow the signs for Route 2 towards
Glastonbury. Get onto Route 2. Once on Route 2, take Exit 8 Hebron
Avenue/Route 94. Then follow directions from New Haven above.
